FY 2005-2006:
- Rural Emergency Department Staffing: Implications for the Quality of Emergency Care Provided in Rural Areas -- The purpose of this project is: 1) to describe how rural hospitals are staffing their emergency departments (EDs); 2) to determine how the certification, training, and experience of ED physicians and other providers in different ED staffing models vary; and 3) to assess the implications of rural ED staffing for the quality of emergency care in rural areas, continuity of care, and rural EDs’ role as safety net providers.

- Hospitalizations of Rural Children for
Ambulatory-Sensitive Conditions -- The purpose of this project is: 1) to describe the conditions for which rural children are hospitalized, including ambulatory care sensitive conditions, and the procedures they undergo; 2) to describe the characteristics of hospitals where rural children are admitted for inpatient care; and 3) to determine what patient-level factors and characteristics of the local health care system are related to ACSC admissions for rural children.

- The Role of Rural Hospitals in Community-Centered Systems of Care: Supporting Population Health Improvement for Rural Communities -- The purpose of this project is: 1) to determine which community-centered, population-based services are being offered by rural hospitals; 2) to determine what characteristics of rural hospitals and service area populations are associated with greater participation in community-centered, population-based service activities; and 3) to assess the implications of rural hospital participation in population-based services for achieving the Institute of Medicine rural quality goals.
